Effect of high body mass index on postoperative pulmonary complications: a retrospective study

Abstract Background Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are associated with perioperative mortality and morbidity. Obesity physiologically affects respiratory function thus could be a risk factor for PPCs. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect high body mass index (BMI) other factors on development PPCs course. Methods This retrospectively analyzed patients admitted intensive care unit (ICU) after undergoing elective upper abdominal surgery at our hospital between December 2015 2018. primary endpoint BMI PPCs, secondary endpoints were length ICU stay, readmission, death within 30 days surgery. Results A total 231 included in study, 27 whom had not significantly stay or whereas higher shorter stays. only occurred patient who developed died while ICU. Conclusions We investigated readmission underwent readmission.
